Region of Queens Council has voted to approve up to $120k plus HST to fund the Municipality's intervenor work for the upcoming ARB hearing for Kelly Cove Salmon's (Cooke Aquacutlure) proposed salmon farm expansion in Liverpool Bay.
The announcement was posted via 'X' (Twitter) during last night's Council meeting and was a result of a decision put to by council at the previous meeting with respect to estimated costs. The Region was officially granted Intervenor status by the provincial Aquaculture Review Board (ARB) back on October 25th, however, Mayor Norman stated RQM's participation was dependant on approving funding for legal counsel and other prepartory work.
The hearing dates have also just been revised, the first session of the hearing will now be March 4 - 8th, the second session will be April 2 - 5th, 2024. A third session if needed will be scheduled for June. Region of Queens will be one of five Intervenors opposing Cooke's application alongside; Protect Liverpool Bay, the Brooklyn Marina, a group of 23 Fishers/Operators (and representing their crews) and the KMKNO (Kwilmu'kw Maw-Klusuaqn Negotiation Office for the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi'kmaw Chiefs).
