Provincial Election 2024: Candidate positions on Open-Net Pen Fish Farms

Hello Queens Residents! The Protect Liverpool Bay Association is a public voice for Queens County in opposition to open-net pen salmon industry, particularly with respect to Cooke Aquaculture's proposed expansion plans for Liverpool Bay.  Please see the attached letter we have sent to Queen's County provincial candidates requesting their party's position on this important issue.

We would like to remind everyone that Cooke's application for expansion in Liverpool is STILL very much alive and currently still awaiting a public hearing with decision by the provincial Aquaculture Review Board (ARB) - it is far from done and over with as some folks may assume with the inactivity. More information on this within the letter below.

In February of this year during a South Queens Chamber of Commerce event held in Liverpool and to media following this, Premier Houston voiced his personal opinion opposing the proposed fish farm expansion in Liverpool Bay, stating he believed it was not a suitable location for these operations, but ultimately, the decision falls on the provincial Aquaculture Review Board (ARB).  Although his statement did not officially represent the NSPC party, we celebrated it with optimism and remained hopeful the wishes of the community and municipality would prevail. Current MLA Kim Masland, has long been fully supportive of ours and all community efforts opposing the expansion.

Not long after, in May 2024, an announcement was made that the Houston government had successfully negotiated a settlement agreement with Paper Excellence to build a new chemical kraft pulp mill - here in Liverpool, an agreement that had been in the works since the previous year.

We now face yet another prospect which could impact the health of Liverpool Bay. Is it destined to be home to both industrial open-net pen feedlots AND a new chemical kraft pulp mill?

We look forward to the candidate responses, and sharing those with you in the coming days.
